Awesome! I finally made a decent painting of my character Vulvenfir. I didn't think far ahead what he was doing, so I guess you can say he's doing some practice fire breathing in the skies.
Program: Sketchbook Pro/Photoshop CS5 Time: I guess it took 17 hours. yeah...17
First off let me say that this does look pretty damn good. and now for the obligatory "but" but there are some problems with this that I would like to address.
The lighting is not really that great. it's suppose to be a night scene and yet the whole image is lit up like a neon sign. Granted the fire does give some lighting and I get that. but even with that fire I keep asking myself why the dragons back is so bright. Is the moon some how reflecting 100% of the suns rays? ok I know it's not but you get what I'm saying I hope. If anything the under side of the dragon (the side facing the fire) should be brighter than the back side and yet it actually looks darker in some places, particularly the under side of the wings.
While the contrast of dark and light does look cool; it would have looked even better if you had used a darken mask and toned down the whole image a bit while leaving the fire only slightly more darkened or not at all. Note: the orange lighting in the clouds looks perfect.
Now about the dragons right wing. (or from your prospective the left wing) I like that the image looks painted. it gives it a more natural look and I can see you've done a lot of nice blending here, but because of this the less painted looking parts really stand out. Particularly that wing looks more artificial than most of the other parts of the image. I'm not sure if you used a texture mask for it but I will say it does look like you did, and if you did it shows.
The fire itself look amazing. I love the colors. I've seen you draw fire before and you have a knack for it. in fact aside from the dragon, the fire is what stands out the most to me.
The fine details on the dragons scales are (pardon the pun) no small feet. I have seen it over and over where the scales of a dragon are drawn more like a flat design with no depth than how you have drawn it here.
The moon looks just great the way it sits with the stars and dark night behind it. and it was a nice touch adding the halo around the moon as well.
Over all a really great looking art piece with some small flaws.
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! i suggest making the snout a little sharper, so that its not so round, cause if you look at the snout of a lizard, it is at a sharper angle than this dragon, other wise this is awesome
WOW the dragons you draw now are so AWESOME i really love your art work its awesome, i wish i could draw dragons like that. oh also you are very welcome
The clouds also lack detail, I suggest a finer brush around the edges of the clouds.
There needs to be more contrast between the lights and darks as its a night seine.
There are wayyyy to many stars in the sky, lessen the stars, and add a few brighter ones to show depth.
And maybe add a bit of steam to where the fire hits the clouds?
Lastly I think he wings should be more open if it where flying on the spot.
Well done and keep up the good work!
