Paramount Climb_Step By Step

Well, the painting was a pretty good hit so I thought I share a step by step with you guys. Enjoy.

1. Sorry, I didn’t save the original sketch, but it consisted of simple shapes. Here I have my basic line work already finished and I started doing line art shading on the head. I used Sketchbook Pro for the lineart.


2. More of the body is shaded. I always keep in mind where the light is coming from to add definition to the dragon’s anatomy.


3. Rest of the legs are now shaded or about to.


4. Added some large scales on two of the legs and started on the wings. I jump from place to place so I don’t get bored.


5. Fixed the left paw, our right, and fixed the left wing, our right.


6. Finished with shading the dragon, started on the rocks. I needed to match the look to the dragon to keep it consistent. I imagined the rocks as round an in front of other rocks. Thats what helped me figure out where the light will hit them.


7. Finished with the line art, now I hop on over to Photoshop CS5 to color.


8. IMPORTANT! Make a channel layer in photoshop selecting the line art. This becomes handy when I want to change the lines color later. Here I’m beginning to create the base colors. One layer for every color.


9. Base colors and some background elements are laid out. I begin working on the scales...


10. Trashed the scales, it wasn’t working. And added simple textures with several brushes.


11. Changed some lines to bright yellow indicating light. Added another layer and with an extremely soft brush made a subtle glow. Texturized the rocks and shaded them. And added some details in the mountains.

Well, hope this demystify the progress of making line art. I’m still teaching myself so I’m not the best.
